How many of us were raised with the advice “always have a Plan B to fall back on”?  As children or young adults, this advice was given so we wouldn’t be disappointed if our Plan A didn’t materialize or we failed and there was another avenue to keep us from completely hitting rock bottom.  We’ve carried this idea (mentally) with us for years and apply it to many areas of our adult life.  In fact, the very focus on coming up with a plan that releases us from the misfortune of not attaining our goal, idea and/or project from Plan A has many of us centered on what is not possible.  We embrace the “What ifs”: what if the very thing I know I was meant to do doesn’t work out?  Take a moment to consider the possibility of NEEDING a Plan B because our Plan A was realized, we did succeed and “Holy Cow!  What do I do next?”

This week I have the great pleasure of opening both days at the Cool Social Gravity Summit in Irvine, CA on November 8 & 9, 2010.  My hope is to get you all energized for what I know will be a tremendous two days of speakers, shared information and engaging conversation.  The theme is “Taking Social Media to the Next Level in Business and Government,” and knowing both conference organizers, like I do, plus looking at the amazing individuals lined up to speak, #GRAV has embraced “Plan B for Success”.

The utilization of social media as a vehicle for our personal brands and businesses has allowed us to connect on a global scale and opened the doors for collaborative and cooperative partnerships.  Social Media is not about isolationism, nor the loss of the human connection.   It’s about being a part of something bigger than ourselves, and the remarkable opportunities we have to learn from one another and affect change.  Our authenticity and transparency has radiated beyond words in a post or blog, and we are soaring with success!  Now is the time to kick it up a notch and formulate a Plan B that continues moving us forward.  Without question, social media will continue to be a valuable tool for all conscious businesses and entrepreneurs.

I consider myself blessed to be a part of this fabulous conference and look forward to connecting with you all next week!

Next Monday November 8th I have the great pleasure of keynoting at the Cool Social Gravity Summit at the Brandman University – Irvine Campus. Thinking about my presentation I was struck by how apt the name of the event was in several ways.

Firstly, as detailed in The Big Book of Social Media Case Studies, Stories, Perspectives’ that will be launched at the event, social media demands that brands use “pull” rather than “push” strategies for brands, marketers, non-profits and government institutions alike. As such, marketing becomes less a push to broadcast messaging and more an effort to generate  gravitational force for your brand to attract likeminded individuals and communities.

Secondly, gravity implicitly communicates import to the messages that are being shared. This could not be more true of social media, which, in its ability to connect individuals and communities around the world across platforms, irrespective of time, geography, or distance portends a rise in global awareness, consciousness and ultimately activism that has the potential force to transform our world.

Finally, gravity speaks to the event itself, which of its very nature, has pulled together thinkers from different backgrounds with different skill sets to inspire collaboration and creativity that are critical to creating new thinking, behavior and ideas.

I for one am incredibly excited about the Summit and am grateful to be a part of it. I look forward to seeing you there and collaborating with you.

It’s no secret that web and social media monitoring can be useful for any business looking to monitor their brand or competitors, but how does this game-changing form of communication relate to politics and government agencies?

During How Online Intelligence Impacts Government and Politics Today (1:30pm-2:00pm, Nov. 9), I’ll explore how crucial social media monitoring is for tracking political campaigns, and how social media can be leveraged at all levels of government.

If you are a political strategist, knowing exactly how information spreads on the Web is vital. Your campaign must be adaptive because messages get distorted and can turn on a dime as new stories break every day.

Spiral16 has been tracking many of the current Senate races, such as Whitman/Brown in California and Blunt/Carnahan in Missouri. By correlating semantic analysis and web influence with breaking news stories and debate appearances, we have been able to get a clearer picture of how campaign information spreads online.

Social media is already being used across different departments of the government. On the local level, some DMV offices are taking online reservations and many more have Twitter accounts to handle customer service questions. State transportation departments like MODOT are blogging and building social media campaigns to spread helpful information and give their constituents constant updates about road construction and road conditions.

On the federal level, the CDC used social media to find out where people are talking about a nationwide issue, such as the H1N1virus vaccine, and mounted a successful campaign to target misinformation. NASA has engaged citizens to get more interested in science through the use of steam games and NASA-sponsored Tweetups.

The governmental and political applications for social media are still in their infancy and the opportunities for tracking online intelligence are limitless. Harnessing the power of the Web is an important must-do for anyone in either field.

From populist backlash to the Wall St. bank bailout and candidate Barack Obama’s masterful use of grassroots networks to the Tea Party, Proposition 8 and the Rally to Restore Sanity, social media has become an integral part of the U.S. political system over the past two years, enhancing and, in some cases, usurping traditional media and broadcast communications. Non-partisan government as well has swiftly adapted to the emergence of social media as a powerful communications and engagement tool, with thousands of official Facebook pages and Twitter profiles with tens of millions of friends and followers.

At the Cool Social Gravity Summit, I’ll be kicking off a day of talks and conversation about the rise of social media in governance and politics, highlighting creative efforts and best practices in federal, state and local government. From San Francisco’s extensive use of Twitter and public engagement around new open data platforms, to using location-based apps to educate about public art and open spaces and leveraging ideation platforms for small-town transformation, social media is creating new civic dialog and new neighborhood and political activists. We’ll discuss the promise and pitfalls for government of Twitter, Facebook and other platforms, and look at how online interactions can create and sustain meaningful community on and offline.

After a long hiatus…

It’s been just about nine months since I held the Government 2.5 conference here in Washington, DC last December, and a bit longer than that since the whirlwind tour of eighteen Cool Twitter Conferences of last year…er, I meant to say Cool Social Conferences. After a nice email from Twitter, I did agree to comply with the name change request, and have since rebranded as Cool Social Conferences.

But, i’m happy to be back putting a conference together, and very pleased to be working with the lovely Beverly Macy, who I got to know well last year. Beverly is the founder of the Gravity Summit, and we decided to work together to create a fantastic two day conference that will definitely be one for the books.

So stay tuned. There’s plenty of news and announcements to come during the next few weeks.
